課程概述

Management science is a field of study that intends to solve decision making problems that confront and confound managers in both public and private sectors by developing mathematic models for these problems. The modeling techniques presented in this course are explained with straightforward examples. Excel spreadsheets are used to solve the modeling problems. The primary objective of the course is to provide students with a set of quantitative approaches, modeling frameworks and concepts useful to help managers in decision making. This knowledge should help students enhance their capability of making more insightful business decisions.

1. Advanced Knowledge and Capability
1.1 Acquire advanced knowledge and skills as preparation for managerial jobs.
1.2 Acquire advanced knowledge and skills as preparation for entering higher levels of academic disciplines.
2. Analytical and Problem-Solving Abilities
2.1 Reason analytically and logically.
2.2 Integrate different points of views to come up with the optimized solution.
2.3 Use evidence and past cases to support views and opinions.
2.4 Approach the problem from multiple angles to formulate creative opinions.
 
課程要求
Cases:
1. Students are to be randomly allocated into groups of four. The groups may be re-formed in due course.
2. For each case, each group must hand in the following items in electronic form by the HARD DEADLINE specified: (1) well-written report, (2) presentation slides, and (3) Excel models. Late work is NOT accepted.
3. On the case due date, each case is to be discussed. Voluntary group presentation is welcome and is to be credited.
4. Further guidelines are to be announced in due course.

Presentation:
1. For the presentation, each group must hand in the following items in electronic form by the HARD DEADLINE specified: (1) well-written report, (2) presentation slides, and (3) original article. Late work is NOT accepted.
2. Further guidelines are to be announced in due course.

Exams:
1. Students are invited to design exam questions for midterm and final exams. For each question, the reason and motivation to set the question must be clearly stated, and the corresponding solution must be provided.
2. The contributed exam questions are to be selected by the lecturer. The individual / group who provide the chosen question will be credited.
3. Further guidelines are to be announced in due course.

Note:
1. No late, no food, no mobile/cellular phone. Thank you.
2. Group works are to be peer evaluated.
